Ascension’s Charlie Mahana Named National Merit Scholar

Ascension Episcopal School
Ascension's National Merit semifinalist, Charlie Mahana, has been named a 2020-2021 National Merit Scholar!

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program.
Charlie’s curiosity and love of learning have led him to complete eight AP exams (passing all and scoring 5s on many) and is currently enrolled in three more AP courses. He is a self-taught physics student and has studied the curriculum for AP Physics 1, 2, C: Mechanics, and C: Electricity and Magnetism. This year, he is studying general relativity, quantum mechanics, and quantum physics and, relatedly, the mathematics that support those avenues of study.

For all of his brilliance, Charlie is also well-rounded. He’s a member of our boys' soccer team, the co-founder of our Astronomy Club, a member of our award-winning choir, and a guitarist in our Rock Band. He has performed in countless school concerts and choral performances.

An athlete, an artist, and an astronomer, Charlie Mahana is a true Renaissance man. Moreover, he is a brilliant young scientist with integrity and a conscience.
