Ascension Middle Schoolers Score Big at Local Math Counts Competition

Ascension Episcopal School
Out of 95 students, Ascension eighth graders took the top 2 spots in the local middle school Math Counts competition at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette this past weekend! Lilly Sheets ‘27 and Natalya Grant ‘27 earned 1st and 2nd place, respectively, from Sprint and Target round scores. The Sprint Round tests students’ speed and accuracy, while the Target Round includes more complex questions encouraging deeper thinking and problem-solving application.

Additionally, Ascension’s four-person team earned 2nd place out of 8 teams, missing 1st place by only one question in the Team Round. Their score qualifies them to compete at the state competition in Pineville on March 24, 2023.  Ascension's team consisted of Lilly Sheets '27, Natalya Grant '27, Graycen Daly '28, and Henri Durio '28, who solved challenging problems requiring collaboration and effective communication.

Finally, Lilly Sheets won the fast-paced Countdown Round, a head-to-head, bracket-style competition for the top 6 individuals.

Math Counts allows students to develop mathematical thinking by testing their skills against peers in an exciting and supportive environment. We are so proud of all twelve of our Blue Gators who practiced, prepared, and grew, all while having fun!
