Ascension Episcopal fights for extra-innings win to advance to championshipSULPHUR — It certainly wasn’t the prettiest game of Ascension Episcopal’s season.
Early inning errors and base-running blunders saw the Blue Gators trailing St. Thomas Aquinas for most of the state semifinal game Wednesday night. Ace pitcher and McNeese signee Sean Michael Brady has been lights out for most of the season, but he didn’t have his best stuff working.
Ascension coach Lonny Landry couldn’t put his finger on why it happened — nerves maybe, with six of the starters having never been to the state semifinals. But at the end of a nine-inning thriller, which included giving up a two-run, game-tying home run to St. Thomas Aquinas’ John Blanchard in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Blue Gators stood victorious with an 8-6 win and a trip to face Calvary Baptist in the state finals.
