Middle-schoolers at Ascension Episcopal School strutted down a catwalk in designs made of duct tape, tissue paper, old CDs and drop cloths Thursday. Music played and a large projector displayed a piece of artwork that served as inspiration for each of the seven designs.

The models walked toward a team of judges and host of students with camcorders, iPads and other cameras.

Teams of media literacy students were paired with teams of visual arts students in a collaboration to document the design process and Thursday’s finale. Some students were tasked with recording the judges as they decided on a winner — all in true "Project Runway"-style.

This was the school's first "Design Challenge — Project Runway: Unconventional Materials," and it mimicked the popular TV show from start to finish.
