Don't Pop My Bubble: Common Language Supports Social-Emotional Curriculum
Ascension Episcopal School
Using Dan St. Romain's "Cultivating Character in Kids" as part of the Social-Emotional curriculum on the preschool campus, our Preschool Director, Julie Bourque, facilitates lessons every two weeks. She joins each class to read a story and discuss the social-emotional behavior being learned that week. Mrs. Bourque helps to reinforce the consistent language that goes hand-in-hand with the life skill being learned.
It’s important to invite parents in to cultivate character alongside faculty and staff, so parents receive a newsletter with ideas for home practice with the common phrases being used at school. Use of common language by faculty, staff, and parents ensures learning and integration for the child.
A few of Mrs. Bourque’s favorite lessons and common language phrases are
Personal space: "My space, your space, don't pop my bubble."
Using kind words: "Words are powerful, just because you think it, doesn't mean you say it."
Showing compassion: "My heart can tell me how I feel. When I do the right thing I am taking care of others."
Mrs. Bourque looks forward to her time in the classroom, “I truly love this part of our curriculum because I get to facilitate a read-aloud, interact with the students, do some teaching, see the benefits of learning the skills, and have fun!”
The Episcopal Church of the Ascension School (Ascension Episcopal School) admits qualified students without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin. We are a welcoming community.
