Ascension Episcopal School is proud to announce that senior Amir Balbeisi has been named a semifinalist for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships in the nation.
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is a highly competitive, merit-based program that recognizes students for exceptional leadership, character, scholarship, and service. The award covers all undergraduate expenses at UNC-Chapel Hill and provides full funding for four years of summer enrichment programs, including leadership development, community service, research, and global experiences.
Approximately 2,000 students apply for the scholarship each year. From that pool, only 500 are selected as semifinalists, and ultimately, just 160 students nationwide are named finalists. Finalists often choose the Morehead-Cain Scholarship over acceptances to Ivy League institutions—underscoring the program’s national distinction.
Ascension became an approved Morehead-Cain nominating school during the 2023–2024 academic year, making Amir the first student nominated by Ascension and the school’s first semifinalist for the program.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Amir and a proud moment for Ascension,” said Stephanie Fournet, Director of College Counseling. “Being named a semifinalist alone places him among an extraordinary group of students nationwide.”
The Ascension community congratulates Amir on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to celebrating him as he continues through the selection process.
