Mask-Making in Media Incorporates Visual Arts

Ascension Episcopal School
During a cross-curricular activity between media and visual arts, Mrs. Gros’ 7th grade media students created and crafted masks using clay, paint, and cardboard to represent a variety of movie genres.

Students were encouraged to use symbolism to illustrate their chosen genre, rather than interpreting it literally, to evoke more emotion. Upon completion, students explained their connections and creative process digitally for classmates to view.

By incorporating a high-interest activity, students enjoyed learning art techniques, research and writing, and media skills. Creating an opportunity for students to practice collaboration and communication while allowing creativity and exploration is what we call an engaging lesson.
